Helen Blanch (Vermeer) Hayes was born July 15, 1917, to Dr. and Mrs. Gerrett E. Vermeer. She graduated from Sheldon High School in 1934 and then attended Iowa State College (University) where she received her B.S. (1939) in dietetics. In college, Helen was a member of Kappa Delta, Home Economics Club, Iowa State Players, Y.W.C.A. and the Health Council. She also assisted in the publication of two college magazines: Iowa Homemaker and Green Gander. Helen married Woody Vance Hayes on January 2, 1946, in Silver City, New Mexico. As of 2005, she resided in Hampton, Virginia.

The collection contains biographical information, photographs, diplomas, a baby book and loose scrapbook pages. The scrapbook pages include many scenic vacation photographs and images of possible family members, though almost all the photographs are unidentified. On March 22, 1948, Iowa State College (University) sponsored a 90th anniversary celebration in honor of the founding of the college, which occurred on the same date in 1858 when the charter act establishing a state agricultural college became law.
